Indonesia’s Counterterrorism Agency to have new head

Jakarta – Indonesia President Joko Widodo inducted Commissioner General Rycko Amelza Dahniel as chairperson of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) at a ceremony at the State Palace here on Monday.

Presidential Decision No. 51/TPA of 2023 on the termination and inauguration of high-ranking leadership official from internal source at the National Counter-Terrorism Agency, signed on April 3, served as the legal basis for Dahniel’s inauguration.

“(The President) has decided to … induct Mr. Commissioner General Rycko Amelza Dahniel as chairperson of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency from the time of his inauguration and grant him financial and administrative rights and other facilities at par with ministers according to law,” secretary of the Ministry of State Secretariat Setya Utama read at the ceremony.

Dahniel, 56, has replaced Commissioner General Boy Rafli Amar, who has entered his mandatory retirement age.

After graduating from the Police Academy as the “best graduate” in 1988, Dahniel steadily rose through the ranks of the police force.

He was a part of the Police’s Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) team, which successfully tracked down the masterminds of the 2002 Bali Bombings, Dr. Azahari and his group, in Batu city, East Java, in November 2005.

He served as North Jakarta Police chief in 2008 before being selected as adjutant to former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during his second office term in 2009.

He also served as West Java Police deputy chief in 2013, North Sumatra Police chief in 2016, and Central Java Police chief in 2019, as well as in several police educational institutions, including the Police Education and Training Institute (Lemdiklat) in 2021.
